80s Trend Prompt: 12 Copy-Ready ChatGPT Prompts and the Video Version
The 80s trend prompt in twelve copy-ready versions for ChatGPT and Gemini, written for American 1980s looks, couples, families and pets, plus how to turn the look into a 15-second VHS home video and what our test renders got wrong.

The 80s trend is one prompt and one selfie: you ask ChatGPT or Gemini for a 1985 version of yourself and get big hair, neon and faded film colours back. Below are twelve versions of the 80s trend prompt you can copy, written for American 1980s looks rather than the Bollywood versions most lists give you, and the moving version: a 15-second home movie that looks like it came off a VHS tape.

The videoWhat the 80s AI trend is
It started on Instagram in the first week of September 2026, spread through the "Add Yours" sticker, and was biggest in India before it went everywhere. People type an 80s trend prompt into ChatGPT or Gemini, attach a selfie and post the result next to the original.
The searches are enormous and almost all of them ask for the prompt itself. In the 28 days to early October, Similarweb counted about 415,000 Google searches for "1980s photo prompt", about 220,000 for "80s trend prompt" and 175,000 for "80s trend chatgpt". Searches for an 80s AI video, the moving version, are far fewer, which is why most tools still stop at a photo.
The 80s look, piece by piece
Every good 80s trend prompt names the same five things. Leave one out and the result drifts toward modern:
- Hair. Big volume, teased roots, a side part, curls with lift. Keep your own colour.
- Clothes. Colour-block windbreakers in neon pink, yellow and teal; stonewashed denim jackets; high-waisted light-wash jeans; white high-tops.
- Make-up. Soft blush and a little shimmer, or none at all for a home-video feel.
- Setting. A wood-panelled living room, a patterned bedspread, a suburban street with a station wagon, a roller rink under a mirror ball.
- Camera. Warm, faded colours, soft grain, a little colour bleed, flash or golden-hour light.

12 copy-ready versions of the 80s trend prompt
Add this sentence to every prompt so the face stays yours: Keep my face, skin tone and hair colour exactly as in the photo; change only the hairstyle, the clothes and the setting. Each 80s trend prompt below is written to paste into ChatGPT or Gemini.
Solo
- Turn this photo into a 1987 snapshot of me in a 1980s bedroom with a patterned bedspread and colour-block posters, big voluminous 1980s hair, a neon colour-block windbreaker, warm faded film colours and soft flash.
- Show me in 1986 riding a BMX bike down a sunny suburban street past a wood-panelled station wagon, high-waisted jeans and white high-tops, faded summer colours, slight grain.
- Make me a 1985 mall portrait-studio photo: a laser backdrop in purple and blue, big hair with a side part, a pastel blazer, soft focus and direct flash.
- Put me in a 1980s roller rink under coloured lights and a mirror ball, mid-spin on roller skates, a stonewashed denim jacket, motion blur and film grain.
- Make a 1980s yearbook photo of me against a mottled blue backdrop, feathered big hair, a striped sweater, slightly washed-out colours.
Couples
A couple's 80s trend prompt works best from one photo where both faces are clear and lit.
- Make this a 1986 first-date photo of the two of us at a diner booth sharing a milkshake, big 80s hair, a neon windbreaker and a denim jacket, warm faded colours.
- Show the two of us at a 1980s prom under a balloon arch, a ruffled dress and a pastel tuxedo, direct flash, soft grain.
- Turn this into a 1987 home-video still of us skating hand in hand at a roller rink under a mirror ball.
Family and friends
- Turn this group photo into a 1985 family snapshot on a plaid sofa in a wood-panelled living room, everyone with big 80s hair and colourful sweaters, warm faded film colours.
- Make this a 1980s summer photo of friends sitting on the hood of a wood-panelled station wagon at golden hour, denim, neon and white high-tops.
Pets
A pet 80s trend prompt works best with the whole animal and both eyes in the photo.
- Turn my dog into a 1987 snapshot: lying on a patterned bedspread in a 1980s bedroom wearing a small neon bandana, faded film colours.
- Show my dog leaning out of the back window of a wood-panelled station wagon on a sunny 1980s street, ears in the wind, slight grain.
We wrote these from the wording that worked in our own video tests; image apps change often, so if a face drifts, repeat the keep-my-face sentence at the end. Brand names and real celebrities tend to get refused, so every 80s trend prompt above stays generic.
Turn your 80s trend prompt into a video
A photo shows the look. A video shows the summer. On 80s AI Video you add a photo, or two, and get a 15-second home movie in four shots, filmed as if on a 1987 camcorder, with the orange JUL 12 1987 date stamp in the corner. Pets swap the roller rink for a ride in the station wagon.

- Her own face and curls, only with more volume
- A plain colour-block windbreaker, no logo
- The orange JUL 12 1987 date stamp
- Colour-block posters with nothing written on them
What our test renders got wrong
We wrote every 80s trend prompt for the video version, checked it against our earlier mistakes and had it reviewed before paying for a single render. The first batch still taught us three things:

- A logo appeared. "A neon windbreaker" came back with a small swoosh on the chest. Asking for a plain, unbranded colour-block windbreaker fixed it in the retest, though in one of our final examples a tiny logo-like mark still crept onto the jacket. Look before you post.
- The couple didn't dress up. Both kept the clothes from their photos. Starting the outfit line with "instead of the clothes in their photos" fixed it.
- The arcade filled with gibberish. Arcade machines always carry a game title, so every cabinet sign became made-up letters, and "no lettering" didn't help. We swapped the arcade for a roller rink, which has the same 1980s glow and nothing that needs words.
The date stamp, the part we expected to break, came out clean in every test frame we checked. In one of the three final examples, the couple, it wrapped onto two lines and once doubled a digit, so it isn't guaranteed. Our test renders took between 2 min 55 s and 3 min 53 s.
What it costs
ChatGPT and Gemini give you the photo version free on most plans. The video is the paid part: some new visitors get a free 5-second preview after signing in with Google, and the full 15-second video at 720p is 13 credits, $7.99 on its own or about $3.90 out of the $14.99 pack of 50 credits. No subscription, and a failed render refunds itself. The pricing page lists every option.

80s trend prompt FAQ
What is the best 80s trend prompt for ChatGPT?
One that names the hair, the clothes, the setting and the camera, and tells it to keep your face. Prompt 1 above is a good start.
Can I use the 80s trend prompt in Gemini?
Every 80s trend prompt here is written for Gemini as well as ChatGPT: attach your photo and paste the text. We wrote them from our video tests and haven't run each one in both apps.
Why does ChatGPT change my face?
Because the prompt changes so much else. Add the keep-my-face sentence at the end and use a clear, front-facing photo.
Can I make an 80s video of me and my dog?
Yes. Add your photo and your pet's. The dog wears a neon bandana and stays a real animal.
Is the date stamp real?
It is drawn by the video model as part of the picture, so it can't be changed. It usually reads JUL 12 1987; now and then it wraps onto two lines or a digit slips.
What happens to my photos?
They're stored privately and deleted automatically after 30 days. Everyone pictured must be 18 or older, and you need their permission.
